There has been a child development theory out there for a while now, referring to some children as dandelions, and some as orchids. The dandelions can be planted just about anywhere, anytime, anyhow, and they will do just fine. Cut ‘em down, they’ll grow right back. Dandelions are in the vast majority and they keep the wheels of human society turning. Orchids are different: rare, extremely sensitive to even the most subtle stressors in their environments, biologically programmed to be delicate but – when they get what they need… biologically programmed to grow into stunning treasures. When they thrive, they are the ones who design the wheels.

There is fascinating new research being done on this theory as it relates to kids with neurological disorders like SPD or autism or Aspergers. Even kids who appear ‘normal’ but have strong genetic predispositions to things like depression or bi-polar disorder. Research is now showing that the same genetic difference that for so long has been called a ‘defect’ may very well be the exact opposite. It may well be the genetic gift that has kept our species alive. The theory now is that these kids, when they are cherished and nourished rather than condemned or isolated, are more likely to become like jewels in humanity’s crown – ending wars, curing diseases, creating masterpieces. Much rarer than the dandelions, but equally valuable – not defective. To reach it's full potential, the planet needs both dandelions and orchids.

This is an article from The Atlantic about this theory. I do agree with some things in this article and the general idea that nurturing can change a child's life, but I disagree with the evolution talk at the end of the article. Just wanted to put this in there so that no one would in any way think I believe in evolution!
